According to the New York Property Insurance Underwriting Association (NYPIUA), owners of coastal property face a special risk of damage from exposure to the high winds of hurricanes. NYPIUA has developed a series of standards to improve the ability of property to withstand windstorms.
These standards have been approved by the Department of Insurance of the State of New York. They are in effect for property on barrier islands within 1500 feet of the coast.
Windstorm Certifications may only be performed by a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect licensed by the State of New York.
